Thompson Rivers University’s ESTR (Education, Skills, Training, and Retail) Market provides an opportunity for students with neurodiverse challenges and intellectual disabilities to develop their skills, find their purpose, and be an active member of the TRU community.
How it all began
The ESTR Market was developed in 2014 as a small cart that students would physically transport to student street by the Starbucks in Old Main. The cart was initially supported by a grant for people with diverse abilities in education and the community. The ESTR Market has helped many students change their lives, allowing them to be properly trained to find employment outside of TRU. With additional funding and support from the Faculty of Education and Social Work, the ESTR cart turned into a Market in 2017, located on the second floor of Old Main. The students make handcrafted jewelry, gift bags, and fresh food. The ESTR Market is famously known for selling the best soup on campus.
Hours, Programs, and Opportunities
The market is open on Wednesdays and Thursdays between 10am-2pm, running from September to May. The program offers certificates in career exploration, kitchen assistance, and retail assistance, combining classroom study, experiential learning, and hands-on practicums. The ESTR program fosters an inclusive environment where all students can learn, grow, and create meaningful change. The program empowers students by helping them build skills and confidence, preparing them for successful integration into the workforce.

The Impact of the ESTR’s Market

The transition from cart to the spacious room cultivated an environment where the ESTR Market values inclusion, excellence, sustainability, support, and community. Their goal is to provide career opportunities for everyone, despite their abilities or challenges they face. Come and visit the ESTR Market to support the students and their incredible work. The co-founder of the program, Saskia Stinson, explains how “it’s become about these students finding their purpose.” TRU’s ESTR Market creates a sense of empowerment and celebrates diversity and culture. We can all become a part of TRU’s community by engaging in programs that support and help students to learn, grow, and take pride in their work.
